What is PageRank?
PageRank is a Trademark of Google. A gloriously detailed explanation of PageRank is explained on wikipedia but to keep things simple here is what it is in laymans terms.

PageRank is a score out of 10 for how important an individual website page is.

A score of 0 (zero) means the importance of the website page seems negligible. A score of 10 (ten) means that the page is believed to be very important.
How do I find out what the rank is?
The easiest way to find out how highly a website page is ranked is to get hold of the Google toolbar and add it to your browser.

You can download the toolbar for free from the Google site - this is the link.

Once you have installed the toolbar you then need to set up the correct option. This is easy. Simply go to the Settings menu button on the Google Toolbar that you have just installed and look within Options for Pagerank. At the time of writing it is in Options and More tab.

A PageRank icon will appear on the Google Toolbar if you have turned it on successfully. For each page you visit this will tell you the PageRank for that page.
How is page ranking measured?

The PageRank value (from 0 to 10) is calculated by looking at how many pages connect to that page. But it also considers how important those links are before returning the result.

So a web page with lots of links to it is good. But a web page with a lot of links to it from websites that have lots of traffic is better.

How can I improve my PageRank?

Improving your page ranking comes down to simply doing two things...

1. Make sure you get links to your site from good quality pages from other websites.

2. Make sure your site has good levels of traffic - visitors.

Easier said than done of course.

PageRank - the number of incoming links matter....

The higher the PageRank score the better Links from important sites will help your PageRank

...but the importance of the sites linking to you matters more
